Early morning Top Ten: Obsessions.

I'm always obsessed with my Ugg boots.

Good morning, everyone. My fingers are twitching to talk to you this morning but I don't have as much time as I'd like. The kids and I fell asleep in my bed together after reading last night. And that is where we all pretty much woke up. Normally blogging is an evening activity for me but not so much yesterday.

Right now, there's a few things that I'm sort of obsessed with. Do you ever get that way? Where you're really into something and can't stop talking about it? Man. I do. And I use the word "obsessed" in the slang way that the hip girls and high schoolers do. Not in the creepy Glenn Close way. Ha.

So yeah. There's a few things I'm obsessed with right now. And I wrote a little quick top ten about it! Like to hear it? Here it go!

I bring you:

THE TOP TEN RANDOM THINGS THAT I'VE BEEN OBSESSED WITH OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS THAT I WONDER IF ANYONE ELSE HAS BEEN OBSESSED WITH, TOO.

#10   My Keurig One Cup Coffee Maker.

OH. EM. GEE.  My sister JoLai pretty much changed my life and rocked my world when she got me this thing. It's so fabulous. And! There's a little basket that lets you use your favorite coffee and not those oppressively expensive K-cups. So even the cheap side of me is pleased-pleased-pleased!

Obsessed with that thing. Obsessed, I tell you.

#9   My iPad mini.

Yes. It's exactly like my iPad. Only mini. And you know? I'm obsessed with it like I'd never had an iPad in my whole-whole-whole life. Which many people hadn't. So my desire for one was totally first world. But damn, I'm glad to have it. And obsessed, too.

#8   Finding another half marathon to run

I spend no less than 15 - 20 minutes each night perusing sites for a good half marathon to run in the spring. I'll be out of town for the Atlanta Publix Half in March. So to keep myself going, I'm searching one out. I've been kicking around the Birmingham Mercedes Benz Half Marathon in February. It's just that it would require me to go to Birmingham to get my number the day before and that's my mom's birthday weekend.

And I haven't been running so far lately. Oh. Did I mention that part? Ha.

#7  Reading some old school books to my kids.

I told the boys that we're going to "kick it old school."  And let me tell you--we started with the classic by Wilson Rawls "Where the Red Fern Grows."

Oh. EM. GEEE.  Isaiah and I were hysterically-hysterically-hysterically crying at the end. Did I mention hysterically? Dude. I highly recommend kicking it old school. And reading to your kids who already know how to read. One of my Grady BFFs Lesley M. is so great about that. She inspires me to keep on reading to my kids no matter how old they get.

Yep.

So now we're alternating between old books and new ones. Currently we're on a book called "Because of Mr. Terupt."  But next? Either "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry" or "Old Yeller." Yay-yuuuh!

#6   My mood nail polish.

So I got my nails painted this dark-dark-dark burgundy. Then on my cruise, Harry says, "Hey, I've never seen you with red nails." And I looked down and they were blood red. Then that night when it was cool and air-conditioned, they were dark again. So it turns out that this polish changes.

Mmm hmmm.

So now I'm constantly sticking my fingers in ice water or showing them to Harry to let him know if I'm in the mood or not. Ha.

#5  ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK.

I. Am. Obsessed. With. This. Show.

Take this from someone who rarely watches television. I watched the entire first season in like three days on Net Flix. I am in love with every character and their flaws and just cannot WAIT for the next season. So, so well done.

Obsessed.

#4  12 Years a Slave -- the book.

Have you read this book? It's only 99 cents on Kindle. It's written in the first person by Solomon Northup, this free man who got kidnapped to the south and put in slavery. It is riveting. Upsetting. Deep. I am obsessed with what I learned there. I am sad that this is a part of our country's history.

I've not seen the movie but I want to. I'm so behind on movies.

#3  Downton Abbey.

Even though I've already seen the entire season 4 on British bootleg (brillllll-iant!) I am obsessed with it. That show is the bomb. For reals.

#2  NOT watching Breaking Bad.

I tried. It makes me too anxious. I kept on trying over the break, I did. But the second episode of the first season nearly gave me a heart attack. I knew I wasn't cut out for something this dark. And isn't that dude the father from Malcolm in the Middle? Dude. I'll have to stick with books, Downton, and Orange is the New Black.

#1  Writing something

I don't know what. But I think I want to write something for real, true and sho' nuff publication. Yeah. Like even a book, maybe.

Gasp.

Did I say that out loud?

That's all I got. Sorry for no pictures today. I only had a few minutes to share. But I'd love to hear about your obsessions.

  1. Great list. I want to try the polish. I also want to read, "12 Years a Slave". Thanks for inspiring me!

  2. OITNB is the business! I binge watched it in 3, okay 2, days and cannot wait for season 2. I'll probably watch season 1 again soon - just because.

I'm going to download 12 Years a Slave - thanks for the .99 heads up. I'm not a big movie watcher, but I'm sure I'll get around to seeing it eventually. Maybe...

My current obsessions: sparkly accent nail manicures. I currently possess more glittery nail polish than the average 12 year old girl. Also scarves. Can't get enough of them. My skin is really sensitive so wearing costume jewelry is out - the scarves let me punch up an outfit without me also needing to spend quality time with my dermatologist.

    1. I am also obsessed with scarves. Love them. Such a great way to--as you say--"punch up" an outfit. Love that expression, too. (Had never heard it.)

  3. You don't want to hear about my obsessions lately. Trust me.
But. As to your #1: I've been telling you for years. So do it!
    Also, you have beautiful hands.

    1. Man, that makes me happy. I always think the profuse washing in the hospital has made them look old. Thanks for the encouragement.

  4. Funny! Yesterday I thought to myself after reading a post in TEAM SJGR on FB and said, Grady Doc should really publish a book. I'm sure it will be a best seller. Go for it

  5. Practicing, teaching, mentoring, mothering, running, blogging... When are you going to find time to write a book? Not that I don't think you can do it, I just stand amazed.

Right now my obsession is getting ready to walk the Atlanta 3Day in October in celebration of 10 years of survivorship and learning to knit well enough to make my daughter a cabled sweater for next Christmas.

  6. Ugh. I'll tell you this- I am NOT obsessed with the Keurig I got for Christmas. I just went on a Twitter rant about it last night. It's the new "improved" (those are sarcastic quotation marks) Keurig Vue, which requires completely different cups than the traditional K-cups. The original K-cups don't even fit! The stores don't even sell Vue K-cups yet!! Did I mention that I didn't ask for a Keurig?!!? I always thought it was gimmicky bullshit and was perfectly content with my no frills, non programmable, Mr. Coffee. But I love my mother, she was SO excited to give this to me, and if she wants me to have it, I will learn to love it.

    Anyway, obsessions.
    1. The meals I prepared myself for my no carb, 10-day (which I'm challenging myself to do 10lbs instead) detox with my linebrothers. Egg muffins that I baked for the week, and just grab one out the fridge every morning? Why didn't I think of this before! And a no-carb Tuscan soup recipe that I made southern by substituting mustard greens instead of yucky turnip greens? Blows my mind every time I reheat it, I'm SO sad i'm almost done with it :(.
    2. My fitbit I got for Christmas (I apparently was a good boy this year). Not quite sure what all it does, but it has been motivating me to take the stairs in the hospital instead of the elevator so +1!
    3. Beyonce. Still. *shrug*
    4. Apple, just in general. Thought my phone was stolen this week. Used the Find My iPhone app to discover that the route my phone was traveling was identical to my bus' route. Hopped in my car, raced through the snow to meet the bus at the transit center, was reunited with my boo. I just don't understand why anyone would NOT have an iPhone. *shrug part two*

    1. Roy, can't you use your own coffee with the new Keurig, too? Just do that. That will make you and mama happy! :) And "find my phone" is the BIZ! And! Mrs. Carter is THAT CHICK. Her new release is ridiculous. Me and one of my friends just randomly text each other Beyonce lyrics all day--the more provocative the better. Ha ha haha.

  7. oh, yes and:

    5. This snowstorm!!! No one wants to come to the hospital!! My clinic roster has been EMPTY all week, I had overnight call last night and my resident told me to go home at 8pm because no one was in the ED. I still get my post-call day off today! Win win win!

  8. Right now, I'm kind of obsessed with your diamond engagement ring! I still love mine, but that rock is gorgeous!!! I am not much of a television person either, but my sister watches both shows you mentioned, I might have to check them out for myself. Obsessed... with life and all that 2014 is already showing me.

    Peace is in.

  10. I'm obsessed with meditation. I can sit for an hour without batting an eye, and when I "come back," ...the world, my world, is a much better place.

    1. Nancy! I'm about to start the Deepak Chopra and Oprah 21 day meditation with my friend Jada. How long have you been meditating?

    2. Almost a year now, well 7 or 8 months. I don't follow any particular method; I've just taught myself to do what works for me. I have severe tinnitus so I have to use headphones with a little white noise or nature sounds (especially water). When you start, I'd be interested in hearing what you find challenging and how you work through it. Good luck!

  11. Oh buddy, I just watched Downton Abbey and Orange is the New Black over break. Both were very good. I was a little hesitant to watch Orange is the New Black and I'm so glad that I did. I can't wait for season 2! Who's your favorite character?

    ReplyDelete

    1. My favorite character is, hands down, Crazy Eyes. What a complex character that could come across as something completely different if you don't pay attention. The actress plays it so perfectly--Crazy Eyes--whoops Susan--is a smart person with a noisy mind. So I love her. And I think Alex is gorgeous and oh yeah! LOVE the Latina posse. They make me smile--especially since they took over the kitchen!

  12. What salon does the mood polish? I've been looking everywhere!
